There's a culture that just takes place in southern sports, and almost more than winning, defense is the name of the game. The southern culture is based on defense, even looking all the way back to the Civil War. When you take a look at college sports, especially this year, South Eastern Conference teams have won the major 3 titles in NCAA sports, the NCAA Football Championship (Florida over Ohio State), the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship (again, Florida over Ohio State), and most recently the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship (Tennessee over Rutgers).
The Lady Volunteers have had an incredible season, only losing two games during the regular season, and one during the SEC tournament to LSU. Last night, they topped off their remarkable year with a 59-46 victory over a determined Rutgers Scarlet Knights basketball program, yet the girls from Rutgers couldn't shut down Candace Parker, the Sophomore from Naperville, Illinois. Parker scored 17 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and finished the game with 3 assists to clench Tennessee's championship victory for the 9th time.
I want to talk about college sports news here for a bit by posing a question: Why doesn't the SEC get more accreditation from the sports media when the SEC consistently puts up the biggest fights and, like this year, wins the major sports titles?
Take the NCAA Football Championship for instance.. Florida was barely voted in as the second seed team for the championship game and ended up clobbering Ohio State in one of the most lopsided football games I've seen in a long time. Not only that, but Tennessee who had a dismal and inconsistent year only lost to Florida by ONE POINT during the regular season. Obviously, the SEC has the strength, and it's strength is it's defense. All throughout the SEC, you have teams who practice defense more than anything else.
And so announcers like to make projections as to who's going to win the big game. UNC was projected to win the Women's basketball title this year, but Tennessee snuffed them out. Then LSU was supposed to win, but Rutgers snuffed them out. Well, Rutgers will win. Negative - snuffed out by the Lady Vols. People just don't like the SEC, and that's something I'll never understand.
Why do you guys think the only way for the SEC to get any credit is by winning it all?
